Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials

The materials studies include low-molecular-weight liquid crystals, polymer liquid crystals, and dispersions of both types of liquid crystals and isotropic polymers. The major goal of the research is an improved understanding of these materials on both a molecular and macroscopic level in order to obtain high-performance materials for optical applications.

The ALCOM research program is conducted by 34 scientists in five research areas:

synthesis and formulation of advanced materials

physical properties

interfaces, instabilities, and finite-size effects

theory and computation

electro-optics and nonlinear optics
