What do
picnics, cookies, beer, movies, pumpkins, karaoke,
softball, wings, theater, photography, and margaritas
have to do with polymers? Ask a Macromolecular Science
and Engineering grad student and you’ll get answers that
range from nothing to everything! Starting here you’ll
find out just how diverse our community is. Our student
body has grown to represent a number of countries
including China, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Korea,
Mexico, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, and the United
States. Our outside interests fit somewhere in between
gathering to play card games and jumping from airplanes.
We enjoy cuisine ranging from Chinese dim sum to more
exotic Ethiopian fare. We work out at the gym, play at
open mics, and dance the night away downtown. The thing
that brought us all together, however, is our interest
in polymer science. It is why we are here. So find out
what makes us tick…whether it is something in our
personal, professional, and/or academic lives, you’re
bound to see at least a glimpse of it in the pages that
follow.

How did this
organization come about? Legend has it
that a professor once approached a student
during a safety committee meeting, appointed her
president, and the rest was history. In
all earnestness, however, this organization had
been fairly loosely defined up until June 2005
when a small group of students gathered together
and decided that a greater investment needed to
be made in planning effective programming.
The Macro Student Organization, or MSO, is the
formalization of what once was and what will
come to be. Some goals for the upcoming
year, for example, include affiliating with a
professional society, establishing a group web
site, offering professional development
opportunities, and continuing many of the social
and service activities already in place.
We hope you join us on our journey.
